…Nadir must put aside pride and act on behalf of workers-GonsalvesGeneral Secretary of the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union, Leslie Gonsalves, when asked why the Union took no substantive action in furtherance of their cause during the recently held Council for Human and Social Development, wholesale jerseys, said that protest action would have yielded no positive results. He said that despite the fact there were Labour Ministers from throughout the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), it is the local Minister Manzoor Nadir, “who must put aside his pride and work on behalf of the workers of Guyana.”According to Gonsalves, there were meetings held with the representatives of the International Labour Organisation who were present during the COSHOD meeting and the issues afflicting Guyanese workers were raised.Gonsalves added that the ILO and Labour Unions across CARICOM have already been informed of the workers plight in Guyana as it relates to the Bauxite Company.Gonsalves recently told this newspaper that the Union has not ruled out possible court action against RUSAL-owned Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) over the dismissal of several workers. He said what is stalling the process is the fact that the court system is tediously slow. This is coupled with the fact that the government “controls certain aspects of the Court System.”Gonsalves further explained that the Union was still waiting to see if the Minister of Labour would reject the reality facing the workers before embracing court action.“We need to take action one step at a time,” Gonsalves explained. |
