Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is calling on consumers to report all incidents of power outages that may occur as a result of high winds and heavy rain since the company may not always be aware of such occurrences.Over the past weekend up until several hours yesterday, several communities on the Coastland were affected by power failures caused by a combination of heavy rain and high winds, and mechanical problems.The country’s main energy company stated that consumers from Sophia,Odell Beckham LSU Jersey, Georgetown, to Success,Patrick Peterson LSU Jersey, East Coast Demerara were the last to have their power restored. Their electricity failed on Sunday during heavy rain and high winds.The release stated, “Checks on the feeder serving consumers from Sophia to Success identified a large tree in contact with the circuit in Oleander Gardens. The area was flooded and the tree could not be accessed.”The tree was removed from the mains by technicians and power was restored around 11:02 hrs yesterday.The release stated that on Saturday shortly after midnight during adverse weather, the transmission lines linking Garden of Eden and Sophia tripped, resulting in a total shutdown of the Demerara Interconnected System.However,Jon Beason Miami Jersey, while efforts were being made to restore the circuits just after 01:00 hrs, there was a second shutdown due to system instability. Consequently, power to consumers in Central Georgetown was restored by 02:00 hrs,Kansas Jayhawks Jerseys, while the last circuit was re-powered about three hours later.The company noted that a combination of the incidents and mechanical problems resulted in 25MW of Wartsila capacity,Gary Harris Michigan State Jersey, consisting of four engines,John Calipari Kentucky Jersey, being unavailable but by Saturday evening one of the machines was restored. This increased the power available in Demerara to 63MW,Le Veon Bell Michigan State Jersey, and resulted in peak period load shedding to consumers in Newtown, Queenstown, and Alberttown,Andre Johnson Miami Jersey, Georgetown.On Sunday while efforts were being made to maintain a stable supply of electricity heavy rain and high winds which commenced earlier during the day caused severe network disruptions.This had resulted in unscheduled outages in several areas from 05:50 hrs to 10:54 hrs. They included Tucville well, Sophia well,Memphis Tigers Jerseys, South Ruimveldt Park, East of Penny Lane, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, and Sophia to Success.However, by Sunday evening the three Wartsila Units that were unavailable since Saturday were restored to service. |
