Just over 1,400 individuals were duly recognised last evening when the University of Guyana held its 45th convocation ceremony. The venue was the University’s Turkeyen campus square where the graduates,Dennis Maruk Capitals Jersey, university staffers, relatives and friends gathered to be a part of the auspicious occasion.The graduates were drawn from the various faculties of both the Turkeyen and Berbice Campuses. They had pursued degree, diploma and certificate programmes.Delivering his feature address at the ceremony, Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Carl Singh, spoke of the importance of the university in national development.He alluded to Section Four of the University’s Act which encapsulates the noble objective of the learning institution. The section,Tomas Plekanec Canadiens Jersey, according to him, outlines that “the aims of the university are to provide a place of education, learning and research of the highest standard and to secure the advancement of knowledge and the diffusion and extension of arts, sciences and learning throughout Guyana.”He also made reference to Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Articles 13 and 15 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which provide for “higher education that should be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit, and that the state undertake to respect freedom indispensable for scientific research and creative activities.”It was against this background the Chancellor focused on the role of the university and its contribution to national development. He said that “the university does not only exist for itself but also “for the benefits it brings our people and our country. As a result, he noted that the concepts of university autonomy and academic freedom must be shown to the doctrine of the separation of power which inn Guyana’s case has been constitutionally recognized in the establishment of the executive legislative and judicial branches of governance.After being bestowed with their respective academic degrees it was Vineeta Persaud of the Faculty of Natural Sciences who was named Valedictorian.The recipient of the President’s Medal, in a brief speech,Curtis Joseph Red Wings Jersey, sincerely thanked family, friends and lecturers for sustained support and embraced the thought that the indelible mark of lecturers will forever remain in the hearts of students even as she urged her fellow graduates to always keep learning by keeping an opened mind.The Computer Science graduate said that she hopes to see tremendous growth in the area of Information Communication Technology (ICTs) even as she encouraged others to delve into the field as there is a bright future in Guyana in this regard.The graduation ceremony also saw students receiving other awards among them the Prime Minister’s Award and the Dr. Cheddi Jagan Award which went to the best graduating student of the Dental Surgery Programme, which was for the first time offered by the university. |
