Today, there are 16 registered institutions using HINARI in Guyana, according to Ms. Cummings, among them are the National Library, Hospitals, Government Ministries, the University of Guyana, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the PAHO/WHO Documentation Centre.But in order to ensure that the initiative is effectively used, Ms. Cummings said that training programmes are arranged from time to time. Yesterday’s training programme was facilitated by Emeritus Librarian of the University of Florida, Dr. Leonard Rhine, and Head of Collection Development and Management of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Mr Daniel Dollar.According to Cummings, in the past four years, Dr. Rhine has conducted over 30 workshops and developed more than 20 training modules, and has been active in international librarianship since 1989. Mr. Dollar, on the other hand, she revealed, is involved in an entity that offers a rich collection of electronic and print resources for teaching, research and clinical practice that has been reorganised to more efficiently manage electronic resources. The entity that Mr. Dollar is associated with, has also instituted the medical digital library programme to make the library’s extensive analogue collections accessible online.Speaking at yesterday’s opening ceremony was Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr Emanuel Cummings, who noted that the University has wholeheartedly embraced the initiative, which he anticipates, will serve to create better days for the tertiary institution. “We must also appreciate the efforts of the Library – the librarian and her staff – for the role they have played in ensuring that this service is offered and for organising the training programme.”He also commended the sustained support of PAHO/WHO to the university.Dr Cummings explained that HINARI was developed in the framework of the internet work introduced by the then United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000.
