By Abena RockcliffePeople’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary and Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, failed yesterday to defend allegations that the governing Party has taken a laid back approach in addressing the high levels of corruption in Guyana.PPP General Secretary,Taylor Gabriel Falcons Jersey UK, Clement RoheeAs he hosted PPP’s weekly press conference at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown,Joe Gilliam Steelers Jersey UK, Rohee said that the incumbent Party has done much to address corruption. However,Sean Davis Steelers Jersey UK, he failed to name at least one thing that was done to confront corruption.Recently,Deion Sanders Falcons Jersey UK, representatives from some of the more developed nations in the world spoke about the uncontrolled corruption in Guyana. Two such officials are the American Charge d’ Affairs, Bryan Hunt, and outgoing United Kingdom High Commissioner, Andrew Ayre.Hunt reportedly said that the high level of corruption in Guyana is hindering development. Recently, Ayre went on record agreeing with Hunt. He made reference to the fact that Guyana is ranked among the most corrupt jurisdictions in the world placing 124th out of 175 countries. The only Caricom jurisdiction doing worse than Guyana is Haiti. In this regard, Ayre said that it is obvious that the government has not done enough to fight corruption and urged that more be done.Ayre spoke extensively on how corruption can put a spoke in Guyana’s progressive wheel and said that the government needs to team up with organizations such as Transparency International to make up in this area where it is lacking.Yesterday, Rohee refused to admit that the PPP fell short in this department. He said,Irving Fryar Patriots Jersey UK, “I do not agree with him (Ayre)… He may have said what we have not done, which is quite okay, but I think in order to balance the call he ought to have pointed out what we have done in the fight against corruption.”Rohee said that in fair and balance assessing, he would expect the assessor to look at both sides “… what has not been done and what has been done, then draw up a balance sheet showing what is really the true situation.”He said, “In balancing what we have done and what we have not done, we can enter a healthy discourse.”Rohee said that he does not think that the High Commissioner made any sort of objective assessment of the efforts the PPP government has been putting into fighting corruption “that is why I do not and cannot agree with him,Rocky Bleier Steelers Jersey UK, it seems as if he (Ayre) has not been making a fair and objective assessment.”But Rohee could not have given a straight answer when he was asked to list some of the “many” things that the PPP administration did to fight corruption. In answering that question, Rohee told the media about a funeral he attended over the weekend. He said that it was a funeral of a PPP stalwart, Isaac Sankar,Jerome Bettis Steelers Jersey UK, 95.While still getting around answering the question, Rohee said that the funeral service was attended by President, Donald Ramotar and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. He said that,Mike Webster Steelers Jersey UK, at that forum, the President spoke “very forcefully on the question of corruption.”According to Rohee,Louis Lipps Steelers Jersey UK, President Ramotar, in addressing those who gathered to pay their respects to the decease, said that he cannot deny that there is corruption in Guyana but sought to assure that the PPP as a Party and the PPP government, always address all known cases of corruption.Rohee said that the President told the mourners that “the PPP does not condone corruption as a matter of policy. We do not support corruption.”Rohee said that those who have evidence of corruption should take measures to have them confronted. One such measure he noted is taking it to the attention of the Ombudsman.Rohee said this, as he pointed out that a member of the Working Peoples’ Alliance (WPA) Eusi Kwayana had found that there were ministers in the People’s National Congress (PNC) administration, who were involved in corrupt practices and took this to the ombudsman who pronounced on it “that is the way we have to go.”“But stirring a pot on corruption to make it more sexy and palatable, putting some more icing on the cake is not (the way to go)…basically, I do not think you are going to get anywhere with that,” said Rohee. |
