Management of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is set to meet today with several parents and students after the entire second year apprentices in Berbice staged a walkout on Saturday. The incident was triggered by the discovery on Friday of one student using a cell phone in the workshop of the Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC). Apprentices are banned from being in the possession of cell phones. The students reportedly became unhappy after management of PMTC took the decision to send the student home.Contacted yesterday, GuySuCo’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Bhim, confirmed that the matter is engaging the attention of the Corporation with Human Resources officials expected to be in the meeting.Yesterday, a number of students spoke to Kaieteur News expressing concerns that they would not be allowed to air their views. However, Bhim made it clear that both the parents and apprentices would be in the meeting which is expected to diffuse the tensions.According to reports, late Friday an Instructor discovered the apprentice with the cell phone. The apprentice was taken before the Manager, Lall Persaud, who subsequently decided that the student would be sent home to bring his parents.Students claim that the apprentice was given a piece of paper stating that he was to only report back to the facilities when the Manager requested. On Saturday, 49 of the second-year apprentices requested a meeting with Lall where they asked for their colleague to stay on until his parents came.“We felt that the decision to send him home over a cell phone was too harsh, wholeslae cheap nfl jerseys china,” one student claimed. However, when their request was denied, the apprentices decided to leave the facilities in support of their colleague.“Late Saturday, we were told by security that the 49 apprentice would not be allowed back in until a meeting. All we want is a meeting involving our parents, everybody and the management. We do have other issues to also discuss and this matter was not treated consistently like other similar ones.”PMTC is run by GuySuCo and includes critical study areas in the electrical and mechanical fields. It includes both practical and theoretical work. |
