Former Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force,Jamie Garcia Jersey, Major General (Retd.) Michael Atherley,Edinson Volquez Jersey, MSM,San Diego Padres Jered Weaver Jersey, was the privileged guest of the GDF at a special dinner held in his honour at Base Camp Ayanganna last week.Chief-of-Staff Commodore Gary Best said that it was a privilege to dine out with Major General (Retd.) Atherley and thanked the Major General for the yeoman service he gave to the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana, serving both nationally,Tampa Bay Rays Wilson Ramos Jersey, regionally and internationally.Chief of Staff of the GDF,Oakland Athletics Santiago Casilla Jersey, Commodore Gary Best (left) makes a brief remark at a special dinner in honour of Major General (Retd.) Michael Atherley.Commodore Best noted that it was through the mentality of Major General Atherley in his capacity of Chief of Staff that the GDF was able to acquire its flagship,San Francisco Giants Jimmy Rollins Jersey, the GDFS Essequibo.He added that the Major General had been his Commanding Officer when he was a Cadet at the Colonel Ulric Pilgrim Officer School (CUPOCS). The Commodore said that while Major General Atherley was retired,Neftali Feliz Jersey, he will continue to be remembered as an officer who exemplified leadership and a man who did not disregard his humanity.Major General (Retd.) Atherley thanked the Guyana Defence Force for the significant gesture and the honours bestowed on him.He said that his tenure with the force moulded him in several ways and that he will always be proud of the men and women in the GDF as well as those who walked with him during his sojourn.He noted that service to one’s country was the best thing a man could do as it also meant service to his fellow man.He thanked the government along with the officers and ranks of the force for giving him the opportunity to serve.In acknowledging that the GDF is required to carry out its mandate in increasingly challenging times, he wished the officers and ranks well and said that it was his hope that the force would continue to benefit from divine guidance.Major General (Retd.) Atherley was presented with gifts from the officers and ranks of the GDF.After signing up as a Cadet in October 1970, Major General (Retd.) Michael Atherley was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on May 29, 1971.Ten years later he was promoted to Major and then to Brigadier after another nine years had passed.He was promoted to Major General on May 1,Oakland Athletics Alejandro De Aza Jersey, 2004,Joaquin Benoit Jersey, the rank he held until his retirement on August 30, 2004.Fifty-nine-year-old Major General (Retd.) Michael Atherley is currently at the helm of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC). |
