The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) presented scholarships to two students on Wednesday. The students, Pulmattie Rabinchand and Naveta Narain, received their checks from Director of UGBC, Professor Daizal Samad, during a simple ceremony.Prof. Samad stated that the scholarships were made available through the generous donation from Mr Sattaur Gafoor of Gafoor and Sons Hardware chain stores in Guyana.Scholarships that were given by the Tain Campus are nothing new since a few years ago, the university approached another businessman, Mr Hemraj Kissoon of AH&L Kissoon, for a scholarship for Joshua Bhudial who topped Berbice two years ago.Kissoon agreed to give $1M over a four-year period. He said that with that same momentum,Leonard Fournette LSU Jersey, the campus had the names of two other students who were in great need for scholarships,Rajon Rondo Kentucky Jersey, one young lady being Ms Rabinchand who also topped Berbice at the CSEC Exams recently.Prof. Samad said that students should not be treated as numbers.鈥淎nd you say, oh, a poor student; go get a student loan, whatever it is. Sell your house and pay for your tuition, whichever way you will鈥, he said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 do it like that at UGBC. We actually look at people as people,Draymond Green Michigan State Jersey, as individuals. So,Mario Manningham Michigan Jersey, we looked at Phulmattie and Navita,Taylor Lewan Michigan Jersey, very bright young ladies and desperately in need,鈥 he said. The students went through a screening process after which they were eligible for the scholarships.鈥淚 met with him [Sattaur Gafoor] last Saturday and we got a check for $300,000,Denard Robinson Michigan Jersey, which will cover this year鈥檚 expense. This will cover tuition costs of $127,Andre Johnson Miami Jersey,000 per year; travel and subsistence, $15,000 and a little stipend,Braylon Edwards Michigan Jersey, $8,000.It gives them a break from worry for the whole year and for that we thank Mr Gafoor,Jake Long Michigan Jersey,鈥 Prof. Samad said. |
