The opposition People’s Progressive Party yesterday rejected statements and conclusions made by Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud that crimes are politically influenced.The statements were contained in an article carried in a section of the print media. The PPP said it has taken note of them.According to the article, Commissioner Persaud said it is extremely unfortunate that crime has grown to become a tool for all political oppositions to attack the government of the day.He went on to give examples of recent crimes which he suggested were politically influenced.He referred to an alleged robbery that took place in Campbellville near the home of the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan.It was alleged that the Minister’s neighbour, Geetanjalie Ramotar, was brutalized and tape bound by bandits, a situation Persaud said raised suspicions.“From all our experience in criminal operations, they (bandits) don’t have time for that (scotch-tape victims); they don’t have time to do that. The other thing, too, tell me, when something like this is going on, why would somebody try to photograph that person rather than to help them?“The Minister was one of the first people to go over. They didn’t call the police; they called the Minister and the Minister called the police.
