The new government has paved the way for it to take control of the key parliamentary committees.By way of motion,Eric Rowe Patriots Jersey UK, the six-party coalition, A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), government has changed the composition of the four sectoral oversight committees to reflect its parliamentary majority.The change came even as the Opposition, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) continued to boycott the National Assembly.While in Opposition separately as APNU and AFC, they used their combined majority to change Standing Order 86 (2) to provide for them to occupy four of the seven seats on the Natural Resources,Jordy Nelson Packers Jersey UK, Economic Services,Antonio Brown Steelers Jersey UK, Foreign Relations and Social Services sectoral committees.The remainder was being occupied by the government,Le Veon Bell Steelers Jersey UK, People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C). In the 10th Parliament,John Stallworth Steelers Jersey UK, it was the combined opposition that had the majority.As she rose to present the motion, Minister of Social Cohesion Minister, Amna Ally,Julio Jones Falcons Jersey UK, pointed out that the Standing Order 86 (2) no longer represented the new government majority.She proposed seven-member committees where four spots are occupied by Government,Randall Cobb Packers Jersey UK, and three from the Opposition to be nominated by the Committee of Selection. Further, Ms Ally proposed that both the Government and Opposition shall be elected to appoint one alternate member for each committee.The motion was supported by Minister of Government, Raphael Trotman. In brief remarks,Taylor Gabriel Falcons Jersey UK, he said that the motion comes at a time when the government with a clear majority must be recognised.Trotman, who was the Speaker of the 10th Parliament, said he was happy that the motion could have been passed without any rancour and corruption.The motion was passed without opposition. |
