Despite losing both her parents, her husband and her only sister,Artie Burns Steelers Jersey, Viola Shaw insists that her love for the Lord and contented heart, are the things that have kept her alive for the past 102 years.Viola Shaw, 102 not out!When Kaieteur News visited Shaw at the Bryer’s Senior Citizens’ Home in Robb Street, Georgetown, the woman explained that she has lived to see so many years because God is “not yet ready for me in heaven”.The devout Anglican commented,Mike Webster Steelers Jersey, “The Almighty is looking after me. I keep asking Him to take me,Franco Harris Steelers Jersey, but he keeps saying that He is not ready for me.”Mrs Shaw was born to Joseph Phillips and Annette Gill,Austin Hooper Falcons Jersey, in New Amsterdam, Berbice, on Thursday April 17, 1913. She was the first of the couple’s two children, and according to her, has always been the object of affection for everyone she came into contact with.Although years and dates elude her, Shaw explained that her mother died when she was only a toddler, and a lot of people wanted to take her from her father, because they thought that she was a lovely child.She explained that her father, in an effort to keep her in his custody, brought her and her sister to Georgetown, when she was only eight years old.The centenarian said that at the time she was attending the Chapel Congregational School in New Amsterdam,Mike Wagner Steelers Jersey, and had to be transferred to St. George’s School.Shaw lamented that she never got the chance to finish,Andre Tippett Patriots Jersey, since she was forced to take up employment with her father’s friends.“I didn’t have much education because I was living with people, and working with them, but God gave me a brain and I remember things very well.”Shaw said that she was first employed to iron clothes for the D’Andrade family, before becoming a maid at Associated Industries Limited (Ainlim) and marrying the love of her life, Malcolm Shaw. She explained that she also worked as a caterer and practiced knitting.Shaw, who noted that she never had any children of her own, says that she has lots of nieces and nephews who live in Trinidad and the United States, and who would have taken her on vacations from time to time.Emotionally, Shaw reflected on the fact that God had shown her so much favour in her life that the people she was working for gave her the house that she was living in.“I didn’t even buy the house I used to live in… The people I worked for gave me the house, and were always so nice to me… But after I got older,Stephen Gostkowski Patriots Jersey, my family sent me to Mercy hospital.”Shaw explained that she had to leave after the hospital bills become too expensive.She confided that the only thing that is keeping her back is a cracked hip which she received while carrying out some chores while living at the hospital.“The doctors said they can’t do anything about it, because when I fell I cracked my hip,Brian Poole Falcons Jersey, it wasn’t broken,Morgan Burnett Packers Jersey, so they could not operate on it.” She said that leaving “Mercy Hospital” was very hard for her because the nurses there had become her family.A tearful Shaw whispered, “They were sad to see me go. I was sad too. They were my friends, and they were like my family. They were attached to me.”For a little over a year, Viola Shaw has been a resident at the Bryer’s Senior Citizen Home, and has been under the care of Ms. Sonia Wills. The centenarian has a diet of soft foods that include, mashed potatoes, macaroni and vegetables, and fruits.She reads her bible every day and is a parishioner at St. Sidwell’s Anglican Church. She explained that although she cannot make it to mass every Sunday, Rev. Randolph Reynolds would come to the home to give her communion.As Viola Shaw celebrates 102 years of life today, parishioners from her church are expected to keep a thanksgiving celebration at Bryer’s Senior Citizens Home. |
