He stood for months before City Magistrate Judy Latchman professing his innocence on an attempted robbery charge. Representing himself, Ceon Maynard sat in the prisoner docks and listened to testimonies from the prosecution’s witnesses and shook his head. He always had many questions to ask.Maynard, of 154 Hadfield Street, Georgetown, was yesterday found guilty on an attempt to commit a felony charge and was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.On May 25, at Hadfield Street, Georgetown,Kevin Shattenkirk Jersey, armed with a knife, he attempted to rob Yugini Cameron, of a Samsung cellphone valued $60,000.According to court facts, on the day in question, around 20:30h,Brian Sutter Jersey, Cameron was using her cellular phone on Hadfield Street, when she was approached by Maynard,Jori Lehtera Jersey, who was riding a bicycle.Maynard advanced towards her with a knife and demanded that she hand over her phone. His attempt to escape was foiled by public-spirited citizens who apprehended him and handed him over to the Police. These consisted of the police officers,Artemi Panarin Jersey, the victim and civilians.When Bostwick closed the prosecution’s case last week he submitted that there was sufficient evidence to tie Maynard to the crime. Maynard chose to remain silent and called his mother as a witness.Even though he appeared baffled when cross examining the witnesses, he had questioned the credibility of a statement taken from him by the police. However, the said statement was later admitted into evidence after the Magistrate ruled that she believed it was freely and voluntarily given.Maynard made his first court appearance before Former Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry back in May and denied the charge.
