Police ranks whose telephone numbers appeared on a cellular phone recovered by the police during raids at Haslington, East Coast Demerara, have been cleared of any contact with the now dead Courtney James.This newspaper understands that a victim of one of the robberies committed by James has come forward and claimed ownership of the phone.The victim, said to be a minibus operator, reportedly told the police that he is a friend of the policemen and had stored their cellular number in his phone.The victim was robbed during a spree committed by James and an accomplice at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara a few days before James was shot dead by the police.Following the recovery of the cellular phone by the police, the ranks whose numbers appeared were questioned and released after investigators were convinced that the phone with their personal numbers in it was among several that were stolen by James.Another section of the media had stated that one of the ranks was in contact with the fugitive, causing concern among colleagues of the policemen since it gave the impression that police ranks were aiding and abetting the now dead James.
