… Angoy’s Avenue poison death trialAttorney at law Mursaline Bacchus is expected to proffer legal arguments when the trial of murder accused Kemraj Gopaul continues today at the Berbice High Court before Justice Winston Patterson and a mixed jury.Gopaul, of Angoy’s Avenue, is accused of murdering (poisoning) Nethu Singh, the sister of the mother of his child, on August 17, four years ago at Angoy’s Avenue.The deceased is alleged to have died after she drank a box of Swizzler Fruit juice which was suspected to have been laced with Cyanide.The prosecution closed its case on Friday. Attorney at Law Dionne Mc Common, who headed the prosecution, had called 13 witnesses.On the witness stand on Friday was Police Analyst, Detective Superintendent Stephen Greaves, who completed his testimony, along with wheelchair-bound shop owner and now prisoner, Osmond Hickens called Ossie.Superintendent Greaves was further cross examined by Attorney Bacchus.Asked about the Swizzler Orange Juice Box that he examined and allegedly found traces of Cyanide inside, the Superintendent reiterated that it was destroyed.Questioned if there is anything that could have been done or used to preserve the box, the Superintendent answered in the affirmative, but concurred that he did nothing to preserve the box.He agreed with the defence counsel that it robbed the court of the opportunity to see the Swizzler Fruit Punch Box.On another point, the Superintendent admitted that there could have been a mix up with the dates on the exhibit submitted by former police Detective Constable Rohan Rajunandan, who had witnessed the post mortem examination.Rajunandan had stated a different date to that of the Superintendent although they related to the same exhibit.Shop Owner Oswald Hickens who is in prison and in a wheelchair was brought from the penal institution to testify.Under cross examination by the Defence, the man stated that the sisters were in the shop on the day in question.Also on the witness stand was Devika Alexander, a sister of the deceased who was recalled for further cross examination. She admitted to counsel that the accused would usually visit her home even after he was separated from her sister.The state’s case is that on the day in question, Devi, the mother of the son of the accused, and her sister Preya, were at a shop in Angoy’s Avenue where they saw Gopaul.He gave Preya a box of juice to give to his son, Reynard Singh. He also gave them a Motorola cell phone and a black charger to give to her sister Devika Alexander.The sister left with the Juice and while on their way home, another sister, the now deceased Nethu came up, took the juice from her sister, punched a hole on the box and took a sip of the contents.A few minutes later she held on to her throat, fell to the ground and started to call for water. At the same time she started to froth from her mouth and her body started to contort.Her parents were summoned and she was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she died on the same day.The Post Mortem which was conducted by Dr. Brijmohan on August 19, 2005 gave the cause of death as Cyanide Poisoning.During testimony it was stated that Dr. Brijmohan had removed some stomach contents and some body parts (kidney, heart, lungs and liver) from the deceased, which along with the Swizzler Fruit Punch Box were taken to Georgetown to be analysed and were found to contain Cyanide.
