Two men are in police custody after robbing a Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara goldsmith of cash and other valuables, after luring him to the village of Ann’s Grove some 10 miles away, with the promise of having gold for sale.Mahendra Persaud, 29 , was lashed to the head and relieved of $99,000, a cellular phone, personal jewellery and a scale around 12:30 hours yesterday.Reports stated that on Monday, Persaud ha d made arrangements with one Vicky, of Ann’s Grove, to purchase some raw gold.On arrival there yesterday, the man took him to the Ann’s Grove Foreshore where he told him he was awaiting a man who had the gold for sale.But Persaud was not too suspicious since he was told that the gold was stolen property and the foreshore was the most appropriate place to carry out the transaction.While sitting on the seawall Persaud was confronted by another man, Carlton Jones, who dealt him a blow to the head and took away the articles mentioned. Jones then rode away on a bicycle to his home at Unity, Mahaica.According to a police press release, subsequent investigations into the report led to Jones’ arrest by the police.“He ain’t tellin people whey de money deh,’ a source told this newspaper.The other man who had lured the goldsmith to the area was subsequently arrested by public-spirited persons and handed over to the investigating ranks.
