A 50-year-old contractor, identified as Alwyn Alexander a.k.a “Charlie”, succumbed a few hours after being admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Tuesday last, after he fell from the roof of the SOL building, Agricola, East Bank Demerara.It was reported that Alexander’s brother was awarded the contract to conduct repairs and renovation to the building. Alexander, who would usually work along with his brother, accompanied him to the location to prepare an estimate for the works to be carried out.His reputed wife, Bridgette Bayne, stated that the man had left with his brother with the intention of commencing this project.She said they had lived together for six years at their Lot 122 Parade Street, Kingston, home and though they shared no children, Alexander was the father of two from a previous union.Kaieteur News understands that Alexander alone was on the roof of the building when the accident occurred around 3:30 pm.It is still unclear whether the contractor slipped on an object and fell or if he slipped on the roof itself due to it being wet from the rain.Bayne told this publication that when she arrived at the GPHC yesterday afternoon, Alexander was receiving medical attention, but she was told by the doctor that he had “sustained terrible head injuries” and that he was “bleeding from the inside”.She said, “He was on a life support machine, so you know, there wasn’t really any hope or anything to be done.”Head of Sol Guyana, Ken Figaro, flew in from Barbados by special charter with an investigator. Mr Figaro said that his company was saddened by the accident and that he was preparing to meet with the family after the investigation.
