These activities he said are geared at improving the communicating ability of staffers. He admitted that this move comes in wake of several reports that the attitude of some staffers, particularly in the Accident and Emergency, leaves much to be desired.“We have had these complaints and so we have taken the initiative to work with our staff by having these courses and programmes.” And without trying to offer an excuse, Dr Rambaran highlighted that the pressures of an Emergency Room is very serious in which staffers are often required to dwell in for hours. This, he said could lend to some staffers becoming short-tempered, a development which could arise among patients waiting for several hours as well. “Patients can get angry and they get aggressive with the staff, and staff in turn, retaliate, but of course that is not right. Our staff should be the trained people and we accept that we will have to continue to work with them but they have to recognise that they are the professionals and should behave in a proper professional manner at all times”According to Dr Rambaran, it is a challenge faced by the hospital to ensure that all levels of staff from the doctor right down to the attendant operate in a professional manner, thus the need to continue working on staffers’ communication skills.
