Trinidad-born Attorney, Ria Mankee Sookram, has been admitted to practise law locally, after her petition was accepted by Justice Joann Barlow at the Georgetown High Court last Tuesday.From left: Justice Jo Ann Barlow,Cody Allen Indians Jersey, Attorney-at- law Simone Ramlall and Trinidadian Attorney, Ria Mankee SookramThe petition was presented by Attorney-at-Law Simone Ramlall,Ian Kinsler Tigers Jersey, who detailed to the court the academic background of the 34 – year old Attorney from Woodbrook, Port of Spain, Trinidad.According to Ramlall, Mankee-Sookram attended Saint Theresa’s Girl RC Primary School and thereafter completed her secondary education at Bishop Anstey High School. Following completion of High School, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Chemistry from the University of the West Indies in 2004.Sookram later decided to pursue a law degree with the intention of later burrowing into oil and gas law.She attended the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill,Homer Bailey Reds Jersey, where she received a Bachelor of Law degree in 2010 and then graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School with the Legal Education Certificate in 2012.She is currently pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering and Management at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine and is expected to graduate in December 2016.Since being called to the Bar in Trinidad and Tobago in 2012, the Court heard that Sookram has practised both in the Civil and Criminal jurisdictions of Trinidad and Tobago.She has specific interests in Medical Law and Ethics,Tony Perez Reds Jersey, Oil and Gas Law,Daniel Norris Tigers Jersey, Trust and Offshore Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution“Your Petitioner seeks to be admitted to practice in the courts if Guyana as she wishes to contribute to developing a robust Caribbean jurisprudence,� Ramlall added, noting the fact that the young Attorney has expressed willingness to share her skill and expertise with other Caribbean Territories is commendable.In her brief remarks, Judge Barlow told Sookram that her choice to embark on regional practice and her interest in oil and gas law shows that she thinking about the future.In response,Nolan Arenado Rockies Jersey, Sookram expressed delight at being admitted to the Guyana Bar Association. She told the court that it is the beginning of a journey to a part of the Regional jurisprudence. |
