Five trade unions have condemned the attack on veteran trades unionist, Lincoln Lewis, who was forced to flee his Cummings Lodge home early Monday morning when three unsavoury characters tried to force their way in.The unions,Johnny Pesky Red Sox Jersey, the Guyana Local Government Officers’ Union, the Amalgamated and General Workers’ Union, the University of Guyana Workers’ Union, the National Union of Public Service Employees and the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers’ Union have all condemned the attack and are calling on the government to ensure that the right to freedom of expression is upheld.   In a statement issued following the attack, the GLGOU condemned those who foster an environment of fear and easy criminality and who labour to gain acceptance of these social ills.“We condemn the effort to force him to give up what are his core values and to abandon the cause of workers…an impossibility for him for trade unionism and the struggles he faces that others may have their rights protected are ingrained in his DNA,” the GLGOU statement said.The union encouraged Lewis to be resilient and called on those who seek to shut him up to honestly review the issues he represents and to address these in a way that is non partisan.The union added that the many honourable men and women of the Guyana Police Force must not be daunted by the public contempt and lack of trust.Rather, they must weed out those who bring disrepute to the service.“We remind them that their allegiance is to the state…not a regime, not external influences and that every citizen must feel confident in their practices enough to feel safe and secure in times of need,” the GLGOU said.“We call on all law abiding forces in our society, the government and the police force to guarantee his protection and constitutional rights,” the statement said.And the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union called on the government of President Bharrat Jagdeo to ensure that the rights of Lincoln Lewis enshrined in the constitution of Guyana are protected.“We of the AT&GWU are taken aback by these developments in our society,” the union pointed out.The AT&GWU expressed concern over the rising numbers of cold blooded murders and criminal acts committed in our society with impunity.The killing of potential witnesses and failure of the Guyana Police Force to find new ways to establish good community relations and fight crime are but few, the union said, echoing the sentiments of Lewis which came out at a press conference last Friday.“Guyanese cannot forever be enveloped in this fear and the voice of Lincoln Lewis at a time when fear permeates our society is a clarion call for people to know their rights and to zealously guard them,Jose Abreu White Sox Jersey,” the AT&GWU said.The AT&GWU saluted the fearlessness of Lewis’, his voice of freedom throughout the years and called for his safety in these times when bodies are strewn across our country on mere suspicion and accusation.And the University of Guyana Workers’ Union also called on the government and the state security forces to ensure that no harm befalls the veteran trade unionist and rights advocate who is the most recent target of anti-democratic and terrorist forces in our society.The UGWU said that Lewis as a trade unionist has been steadfast in supporting the principles of freedom, Government accountability to the people, justice for all and a living wage.“He has demonstrated that he is above partisan politics and is a good servant of the people. Any threat to his life is a threat to all trade unionists and will not be tolerated lightly.”The UGWU said that any harm befalling the General Secretary of the Caribbean Congress of Labour will be placed at the feet of those whom he oppose, those who fear his integrity and purpose as a liberator of mindsAnd the National Union of Public Service Employees (NUPSE) said that it regrets the recent developments in Guyana which place the country backward in time that should have no place in a democratic society or in modernity. It noted that freedom of expression is under serious threat.“First it was the media, now it is trade unionists who by the very nature of their role are obliged to speak out and confront issues which put workers at risk and jeopardize their livelihood.“Lincoln Lewis is no ordinary trade unionist. His struggles for workers’ rights have spanned all post independent regimes. His voice is a voice clamouring for justice. Justice is not a privilege granted by any government…it is a human right,Andre Dawson Cubs Jersey,” NUPSE said in its statement.Noting that Lewis has the right to determine his level of confidence in the police, the union called on the commissioner to clean up force and rid it of those who bring shame to the organization.The Guyana Bauxite and General Workers’ Union recalled that it was Lewis, along with other trade unionists,Michael Jordan White Sox Jersey, including George Daniels, Gordon Todd, Komal Chand, Taikchandra,Frank Thomas White Sox Jersey, Nanda Gopaul,Jon Lester Cubs Jersey, along with political leaders Walter Rodney, CY Thomas, Paul Tennessee and the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, who took centre stage to struggle against the Burnham regime which we at the time felt were on the wrong course.
