Some residents of Herstelling and their Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairperson yesterday clashed over a decision to remove some of the streetlights in the village.At the NDC Office,Patrick Chung Patriots Jersey, Chairperson Zameena Sookdeo was trying to calm the residents but to no avail.According to Sookdeo,Mike Wagner Steelers Jersey, the decision by the council was unavoidable. She cited the expenses that have been incurred as it relates to the excessive lights in the village most of which she considered illegal,Eddie Lacy Packers Jersey, given that villages paid GPL technicians to install them in front of their property.She said that the NDC was currently in possession of a bill from the Guyana Power and Light for in excess of $14.5M which has to be paid monthly as such the councilors took the decision.According to Sookdeo,Rob Gronkowski Patriots Jersey, streetlights will remain at the street corners,Joe Greene Steelers Jersey, which she believes is fair given the circumstances.She added that there are some residents who have even defaulted on paying their taxes which impact adversely on the council’s ability to pay its bills.The residents,Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey, however,Morgan Burnett Packers Jersey, are contending that all should not be made to suffer for the shortcomings of a few.The residents are adamant that when the councilors assumed office the village had lit streets and they now question the removal of some street lights,Brett Favre Packers Jersey, something that the previous council was able to maintain the lights.The residents are adamant that leaving the lights just at street corners was not enough.The residents say that they are now fearful that banditry would be on the increase given that the place will be poorly lit at nights. |
