For example, under our laws the age entry into employment is 15 and for the employment of young persons, is between 15 and 16. However, some groups would use 15 to 18 as the age for both. Such definitions would skew, negatively, incidence of child labour.”The Minister warned that Guyana has also cautioned and expressed its concerns about groups that developed countries hire to execute projects, and the honesty with which these contractors report on their deliverables.On Monday, government officials blasted the US report which spoke of incidents of Child Labour in Guyana but the officials claimed there is not a shred of proof and said that reports like these could hurt the country’s friendship with the US.Nadir is leading a team to Switzerland for the ILO session. Addressing the ILO’s report on Child Labour, the Minister assured Guyana’s commitment to the goal of ending all worst forms of Child Labour.“That is why Guyana has ratified ILO conventions 182 and 138. Guyana has set its minimum age for employment at 15 years. Guyana has amended its constitution (1999) to ensure that all children under 15 years are in school. Guyana has created a child protection agency (2009). Guyana has introduced a single parent assistance programme which includes skills development and an economic assistant grant for them to buy tools.Additionally, Guyana has amended its laws to give tax relief to any financial institution that has a single parent financing facility and has provided, beginning this year, a uniform for every child of school age along with a meals programme.”On the issue of a Global Pact on employment, Nadir told the gathering that Guyana endorses the statement by the Director General who in his World Environment Day message 2009, called for low carbon development.“Guyana has chosen this as its development option.
