An adult female Olive Ridley sea turtle was on Saturday morning rescued by a team of vigilant environment lovers just off the coast of Georgetown after it was sighted in distress by workers of the fisheries Division.Battered and barely surviving, the small sea turtle looked miserable. Her carapace was cracked, her front left flipper was gone and a cut was already sliced through three-quarters of her right front flipper; experts surmise that she had gone through a series of unfortunate events.Olive Ridley with amputated flipperAccording to a statement, around 9:30 hours on Saturday, news of the sea turtle being spotted in the vicinity of the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) wharf surfaced.Immediately, Senior Environmental Officer of the Protected Areas Commission , Analise Bayney,Ronnie Lott College Jersey, with the resources of the Georgetown Zoo, Romeo De Freitas of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society (GMTCS),Villanova Wildcats Jerseys, Sophie Edgehill of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Sean Mendonca of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Wildlife Division went to her rescue.According to De Freitas, who has vast experience dealing with the four species of sea turtles that nest on Shell Beach each year, the rescued Olive Ridley had to be over thirty years as this is the age this particular specie reaches sexual maturity.He surmised that that would have been the reason she was offshore, despite the sea turtle nesting season in Guyana being from March to August each year, the turtles are offshore in February when they mate before the female comes ashore to lay her eggs.Male sea turtles never come ashore, De Freitas noted.The evidence was clear that the sea turtle had become entangled in a fishing net which had completely amputated the left front flipper and had cut through three quarters of the right front flipper.Cracked shell of the Olive RidleyThat state would have made it impossible for the Olive Ridley to dive which is necessary for it to feed. It normally feeds on crabs and shrimp so the experts believe it would have been enduring slow starvation as the amputated flipper revealed that it was not a recent occurrence.Being unable to dive and swim properly,Ryan Arcidiacono Villanova Jersey, the turtle was bobbing around with the currents which brought it into the Demerara River where it was even more unlucky to be wedged between two vessels which then cracked its shell.
