– Canadian specialistWith planning and commitment,Wholesale Jerseys Online, the terrible occurrence of premature cardiac death in Guyana can be reduced.  At least this is according to Dr James Wayne Warnica of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta,Jerseys NFL China, Canada.Dr Warnica’s disclosure was forthcoming when he presented a paper at the recent hosting of the Sixth Guyana Medical Scientific Conference which was held at the Guyana International Conference Centre. His paper was entitled ‘Acute Coronary Syndromes in Guyana’.In his presentation, Dr Warnica alluded to reports of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which states that almost a third of all deaths in Guyana are due to cardiovascular causes. In fact, he disclosed that coronary artery disease accounts for the majority of cardiac deaths from myocardial infarction (heart attacks), congestive heart failure and arrhythmia; the latter being an irregular heartbeat.Dr Warnica explained that the initial presentation of a patient with coronary heart disease, in Guyana as well as all over the world, is often as an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).ACS, he outlined, refers to any group of symptoms attributed to obstruction of the coronary arteries. The most common symptom prompting diagnosis of ACS, Dr Warnica said, is that of chest pain, often radiating off the left arm or angle of the jaw,Alex Delvecchio Red Wings Jersey, pressure-like in character, and associated with nausea and sweating. This condition, according to him, usually occurs as a result of one of three problems: ST elevation myocardial infarction which could account for at least 30 per cent of all cases, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction accounting for 25 per cent or unstable angina accounting for 38 per cent. But according to Dr Warnica,Adrian Wilson Cardinals Jersey, “early and effective diagnosis and management of ACS has been shown to lower the risk of in-hospital deaths, and the risk of future complications of heart failure and arrhythmias.”He revealed that cardiac care centres in North America and Europe,NFL Jerseys Cheap, for instance, have developed guidelines for the care of patients with an ACS that have become standards of care. Moreover, he noted that there is need for the local health sector to consider questions such as: “what are the current guidelines for ACS management? More importantly, how can they be applied most effectively in Guyana?”Dr Warnica further highlighted that the care of ACS patients ideally requires a three-pronged approach which should include a public health/community education limb to educate people about risks of coronary heart disease, and the symptoms that may occur as well as the when, and how, to get to the hospital quickly.Another aspect of the approach, Dr Warnica noted,Arizona Diamondbacks Fernando Rodney Jersey, is the need to develop guidelines and systems in the hospital that recognise ACS as an emergency, and to identify the measures to address it.  Added to this, he said that there is need for patient care and then follow-up after discharge to be sure medication and other programmes to reduce risk of recurrent cardiac events are being followed, even as complications are identified and treated effectively. However, measures are already in place to address cardiac challenges here.In fact, through the Caribbean Heart Institute (CHI), Guyana is gearing to take the lead in the provision of Radiofrequency Catheter Ablations for arrhythmias. Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation is a procedure that is performed to correct a disturbance in the heart rhythm.CHI’s Medical Director, Dr Mahendra Carpen, during an interview with this publication observed that the procedure is not one that is done on a wide scale in the Caribbean. This state of affairs was brought to his attention when he attended the 28th Caribbean Cardiac Society Scientific Conference in Curacao earlier this year, where he was required to make two oral presentations on the state of Cardiology in Guyana.According to him, the condition is known to happen mainly in young women and is usually caused by an abnormal electric circuit within the heart. He disclosed that “you have a lot of patients coming and say they feel like their heart is racing and there is palpitation that occurs from time to time.” But although there are medicines that can address the condition, Dr Carpen noted that there could be some side-effects, thus the need for Radiofrequency ablations. The procedure will be one of several that CHI has sought to introduce since its introduction in 2007 which embraces the fact that “there are lots of interesting things happening regionally in the world of cardiology,” said Dr Carpen. He disclosed that at the recent conference it was discovered that while the level of cardiac service here has room for improvement it is comparable to what is offered elsewhere.“We are not where we want to be just yet, but we are certainly getting there,” the Medical Director said.
