Police are blaming speeding for the death of 22-year-old Arif Williams who perished when the car he was driving crashed into a guard hut at Montrose, East Coast Demerara on Tuesday night.Dead: Arif WilliamsWilliams was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital hours after his rented car toppled several times, while his female companion Ashley Singh was admitted a patient at the same institution. The security guard, who was in the hut at the time, also received injuries but was treated and sent away.Police said that their investigations revealed that Williams of Triumph, East Coast Demerara was driving a rental car allegedly at a fast rate around 22:30 hours, when he reportedly swerved from a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road and the vehicle toppled. The vehicle struck the guard hut of a residence, resulting in injuries to security guard Mahendranauth Krishram, 52, of Atlantic Gardens, ECD.A police told this newspaper that Williams had picked up Singh his girlfriend, and was heading west along the Montrose Public Road to purchase food. The source said that after swerving from an object, Williams’ car rolled over many times before slamming into the guard hut located about 60 yards off the public road.Williams was reportedly hurled from the vehicle and landed several feet away.“It clearly showed that he was pacing the road. It is highly impossible for him to reach where he    landed if he wasn’t speeding,” the source said.Williams’ death has taken the country’s road fatality figure to 34. It came after the death of a woman at the GPHC, yesterday, one week after she was involved in a vehicular accident in Berbice. It also comes at a time when the police traffic ranks have been controversially ordered to “go light” on speeding and drunk driving offenders.Figures show that from an average of 500 speeding cases per week, the Police Traffic Department recorded no such case for the period April 19 to April 25.There were also no recorded cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, a noticeable reduction from the high figures previously recorded. And this is despite the recent acquisition of radar guns and breathalysers, at a significant cost to taxpayers.
