Essequibo Prison van accident…The 17 year-old prisoner who was hospitalised two Friday’s ago following an accident on the Essequibo, has taken a turn for the worst. Up to press time yesterday Vishaul Ramlall was still a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit.According to relatives of the injured man, he is now crippled from his waist down.They said that upon realising this, Ramlall has fallen into a state of depression.Relatives said that since the man realised and was told by doctors that he may never be able to use his legs again, it has taken a psychological effect on him.This newspaper was told that while the prisoner remains under police guards, the ranks are asked to keep a keen eye on him, since he has indicated to relatives that he wanted to end his life.Two Fridays ago around 8:00hours, Ramlall along with several other prisoners were being escorted to the Supernaam Ferry Stelling, en route to Georgetown when the accident occurred. The incident occurred at Johanna Cecelia, on the Essequibo Coast.Sources say that one of the vehicles which was being used as part of an escort somehow slammed into the back of the prison van. As a result of the sudden impact of the hit, all of the prisoners who were in the back of the van were sent flying out of the vehicle.Ramlall and another prisoner who is currently on trial for murder were severely injured. The two were first treated at the Suddie Hospital but were transferred to GPHC. The other prisoner has since been discharged from the hospital and sent back to Camp Street Prison.
