-court hears woman stashed birds in hair curlersAn American citizen was fined $75,000 yesterday after she was caught trying to smuggle 18 Twa Twa birds in her luggage, minutes before she was scheduled to board a Caribbean Airlines Flight, destined for JFK Airport, New York.Ranjit Singh Thakurdin, 27, of Bronx, New York, USA admitted that on October 31, last, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, she attempted to smuggle the birds out of Guyana, without having the necessary permission, when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.According to Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, the woman concealed the birds in several hair curlers. Jones told the court that on the day in question, around 16:20hrs, the woman was an outgoing passenger on the flight which was bound for New York.The Prosecutor said that while Thakaurdin’s luggage was being passed through a scanner, several strange images were noticed. As a result, a search was conducted and led to officials discovering the birds, along with 29 other species of the animal. They were found hidden in hair curlers concealed inside her luggage.After imposing the fine on Thakurdin, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan banned the woman from obtaining any form of permits for export, from the necessary authorities for a period of 12 months. |
