The farm is located on what was once one of the largest crop production centers in Guyana in the 1960’s, producing tons of fresh fruits, vegetables and tubers per month.However, the enormous demand for aquaculture products has led to this land being acquired by New Line Aqua-Farm, for production of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), Arapaima (Arapaima gigas) and Tigerfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum).New Line Aqua Farm started development in 2001, with the intention to engage in commercial, yet environmentally friendly, aquaculture, focusing on the Nile and Red Tilapia, Tambaqui and Hassar.By early 2002, small scale production had started, and by 2003, commercial harvests were achieved.Today, New Line Aqua-Farm Inc. is a modern aquaculture facility, and the largest aquaculture farm in Guyana, with its own feed mill and fish processing plant, supplying local and overseas markets. The number of species cultured has grown, and the acreage under aquaculture continues to increase.Tilapia produced is currently exported to the Caribbean and North America, while the Tambaqui is sold mostly locally, with some exports to Suriname and Brazil.The farm currently has about 100 acres under aquaculture, and the culture area is currently being expanded.The farm also has the largest Tilapia Hatchery in Guyana, and the only Tambaqui Hatchery locally.All the irrigation water comes from rainfall, and is stored in a 300 acre reservoir, ensuring that ground water is not depleted.
