The Guyana Defence Force is exploring the possibility of overseas treatment for one of its ranks, who was severely burnt following an explosion aboard the GDFS Barracuda last Saturday. The army said that this is despite the soldier responding well to treatment provided at the Burns Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital. This newspaper had first reported the incident in its Monday edition.A statement from the GDF said that the victim, Coast Guard’s Able Rating (AR) Kevin Jagan, sustained first and second degree burns to his face and upper body as a result of an explosion aboard the GDFS Barracuda at 18:30 hours on Saturday. The ranks aboard the GDFS Barracuda are currently involved in Anti-piracy patrols in the Berbice area.According to the Guyana Defence Force, an inquiry which was launched immediately after the incident revealed that Jagan sustained the burns when he opened a small hatch on the vessel.Combustible gases emanating from within the hatch ignited when he approached the hatch with his lighter, causing him to suffer burns about his body. The GDF says that it is not normal for a soldier or anyone to use anything with a lighted, exposed flame when seeking to examine a dark hatch. Jagan collapsed on the deck but was rushed by his fellow sailors to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a GDF ambulance. His condition is listed as stable.“Although he is responding to the treatment being provided, the Guyana Defence Force will be exploring all avenues, both local and overseas, to ensure that AR Jagan receives the best treatment for the injuries he sustained in the incident,Cheap Jerseys NFL,” the GDF release stated.Chief Of Staff Commodore Gary Best along with the entire Force is praying for AR Jagan’s speedy recovery. |
