“…police officers should get double salary increase”President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Clinton Urling is of the opinion that removing the current Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee from office is not the solution to the crime situation, but reiterated the call of some others, for the raise in the salary of officers of the Guyana Police Force.GCCI PresidentClinton UrlingHe stressed “a double increase,” noting that he was shocked to know that a Senior Superintendent works for a salary of only $70,000 per month. Urling explained that having Rohee demit office would not see “criminals shaking in their boots.” He recommended that the agencies responsible for executing security policies, such as the Guyana Police Force (GPF), be looked at closely.Urling was at the time addressing a gathering of local businessmen and women, including several politicians, during the launching of the second edition of the Business Directory Magazine last Friday evening at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown. There, he said that the Home Affairs Ministry, and by extension the Government of Guyana, need to “stop talking the talk, and start walking the walk,” urging, particularly the politicians, to “fix and not fight”.The GCCI President also called for the swift and full implementation of the Procurement Commission and the Anti Money Laundering Act, as well as the appointment of an Ombudsman. Urling also cited the need for the provision of more opportunities for training. In explaining the features of the 68-page magazine, Urling said that that comes like a free advertisement for paying members of the GCCI.The publication highlights the products and services offered by the Chamber’s member businesses to both local and overseas consumers. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the oldest private sector representative body in Guyana. It was established in 1889.
