With the General Elections mere months away and the fact that the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) is yet to identify a Presidential Candidate, leader Robert Corbin is adamant that the party is not wasting time.Corbin recently told media operatives that any process that creates so much enthusiasm among the party members could not be an act of futility.“On the contrary…I believe that the exercise of identifying a presidential candidate has generated enthusiasm within the membership which is needed in an elections,” said CorbinThe Opposition Leader said that he is very pleased with the interest shown not only with the PNCR members but also among the general electorate. He said that the party is breaking new ground by engaging in a democratic process in trying to identify a candidate.Corbin emphasized that the party was seeking to identify a person not just to represent the party but to be the President of Guyana.“So any exercise which gives people an opportunity to participate in the process would not be an act of futility, in fact it is a useful exercise and is contributory to the generation of interest and enthusiasm in the party and in the society in general.”Corbin did confirm that the party’s Central Executive has endorsed the process for the selection of the presidential candidate and the procedure will be made available to the public. To date, the Party’s Vice Chairman Basil Williams, Executive Member Dr Faith Harding as well as retired Brigadier David Granger have all signaled their interest for the post.Meanwhile Public Relations Officer Malika Ramsey used the opportunity to urge persons to register and uplift their Identification Cards so that they will be able to vote in the upcoming General Elections.Ramsey reminded that the Continuous Registration programme, being undertaken by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), commenced in September last and is expected to conclude at the end of this year. She said that her party is urging all Guyanese, especially the unregistered young people of 14 years and above, to take advantage of the opportunity to become registered.“If you were unable to register during the House-to-House Registration programme, you should visit the GECOM Office in your District with your source documents to ensure that you are registered on this occasion.”According to Ramsey, there are still many persons who were registered during the House-to-House Registration programme and have not yet collected their new National ID Cards.
