General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (GRPA), Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj, has lashed out at sentiments expressed by Dr. Turhane Doerga, senior official of Alesie Rice, and prominent rice farmer of West Demerara, JinnahDharamkumar SeerajRahman.Last week during a press conference at the Georgetown Club, the officials said that the rice industry is facing a deep crisis with no markets for a significant quantity that will be generated in the coming crop. Rahman also said that the situation may even cause millers to reduce purchases of paddy and definitely affect the price being offered to farmers. The two officials pledged to give their support to the combined Opposition parties in the upcoming General and Regional Elections in Guyana, accusing the government of neglecting the plight of rice farmers across the country,Michael Thomas Dolphins Jersey, especially in Essequibo. But Mr. Seeraj,Neville Hewitt Dolphins Jersey, speaking to Kaieteur News on Monday in Berbice, said that the two individuals have tainted characters and have their own agendas.“I don’t know who Doerga is—sometimes he is a former CEO—other times, he’s a Consultant, then for convenience, he’s CEO and associated with Alesie—And when you talk about the hundreds of farmers that are owed,Zach Ertz Eagles Jersey, then he’s a Consultant,” Seeraj said. He claims that Doerga’s portfolio in the rice industry changes conveniently.Seeraj said that Doerga has a “checkered history in the rice industry.” He added that both Doerga and Rahman are “in good company” on the PNC platform. Seeraj said that neither Doerga nor Rahman is a member of the GRPA. “They don’t represent any farmers—this committee that they are talking about is a committee of two.”He claims, too,Chase Daniel Eagles Jersey, that currently Doerga has been taken to court by the Quality Rice Co-op, “who has sued him”. He claimed that Doerga has “prostituted himself for being a member of the co-op from one side and a member of the company on the other side to take in bags of paddy—the paddy cannot be sold and now the farmers are indebted and the government had to step in to bring relief.”Seeraj said that even though the industry is experiencing numerous problems, it is not in crisis. Guyana has been breaking production records in recent years, with more than 630,000 tonnes of rice produced in 2014.A record-breaking 500,000 tonnes was exported last year. But according to Doerga, more than 150,Jordan Hicks Eagles Jersey,000 tonnes was left over from last year. With another 400,Carson Wentz Eagles Jersey,000 tonnes of paddy coming in within a fortnight, the situation is dire.RPAAC said that it is now preparing to endorse the Opposition with the message to be taken to farmers countrywide, Doerga vowed last week. “We have been experiencing phenomenal growth and both Mr. Rahman and Doerga are nothing but activists now for the Opposition—it has nothing to do with rice; in fact, the industry can do well without them.”Seeraj does not believe the two are going to influence the vote of rice farmers in the upcoming elections.Within the last few weeks, there have been protests in Anna Regina, Region Two; and in Black Bush Polder, Region Six. In dollar amount, paddy sale by farmers last year would exceed US$45M, with export earnings of over US$250M.Seeraj added that the fact that Guyana has almost doubled production in four years “is testimony to the role the government is playing in the industry; how we’ve been able to move it from what it was before,Herman Edwards Eagles Jersey, to a position where the PNC was importing rice, to now under the PPP,Mike Pouncey Dolphins Jersey, where last year we exported more than 500,000 tonnes of rice.” Seeraj added that,Brandon Mebane Chargers Jersey, rice, like any industry going through tough times, is going to overcome the struggles. |
