The local nursing fraternity has been bolstered with four nurses, who on May 16 last,Bo Jackson Raiders Jersey, graduated with their Master’s Degree in Nursing from the Saint Joseph College in Connecticut,Doug Flutie Chargers Jersey, United States of America. The online programme commenced in 2008 and culminated last month.The graduates, all members of the Guyana Nurses Association (GNA),Paul Krause Vikings Jersey, are Mandy La Fleur, Nicola Melville,Mark Bavaro Giants Jersey, Karen Roberts and Tabitha Mallampatie. They graduated with high honours and have since been inducted into the Honor Society of Nursing Sigma Theta Tau International (SSTI) – Chapter Iota Upsilon.The GNA in a statement yesterday extended congratulations to the successful nurses. According to the GNA,Art Monk Redskins Jersey, the nursing programme was made possible through a collaboration of the University of Guyana and the Saint Joseph College.Mrs. Gwendolin Tross, former Coordinator of the Nursing programme at the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Health Sciences was the “driving force behind this successful partnership,” the GNA statement highlighted yesterday.Three of the four graduates (La Fleur, Melville and Roberts), who obtained their BSc Nursing from the University of Guyana,Ernie Stautner Steelers Jersey, were selected by Mrs Tross for the pilot programme. Mallampatie, due to her Indian national status gained her BSc in India, thus was not selected by Sister Tross but was a tutor at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and had connected to St. Joseph’s College through that hospital.It was underscored by the GNA that “because of the high academic standard set by these nurses, the Saint Joseph College is happy to continue to provide additional sponsorship to other BSc Nursing graduates of Guyana.  It is hoped that the experience gained from the programme will be of benefit to Guyana, especially the Schools of Nursing and the University of Guyana Nursing programme.” Already another batch of two nurses has commenced the Master’s programme this year.It was underscored by the GNA that the further qualification of these nurses represents a significant addition to the list of health professionals who hold a Master;s Degree.Among such qualified nurses already in the sector are Audrey Corry,Bart Starr Packers Jersey, Director of Nursing Services at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation; Vashti Hinds,Rocky Bleier Steelers Jersey, former Principal Tutor of the Georgetown School of Nursing; Gillian Butts-Garnett attached to the United National Population Fund; Emily Cumberbatch, attached to the Ministry of Health, and Winifred Razack as well as Director of the Health Sciences Education,Ray Lewis Ravens Jersey, Noel Holder.Currently, Mallampatie and Razack are full-time lecturers at the University of Guyana. Graduates have in the past conducted guest lectures at the University of Guyana, an undertaking which is expected to continue in the future, according to the GNA.The recent graduates have since provided an orientation for prospective students at the University of Guyana and commitment has been expressed by the graduates to mentor successive students and to use their knowledge and skills to benefit their nursing colleagues and the general health sector of Guyana.
