– he is comfortable being the backseat driver with no responsibilities  By Abena RockcliffeFormer President Bharrat Jagdeo used his presidency to enrich himself so much that he does not have to work another day in his life. Also, he is very much aware of the fact that he has destroyed the social, economic and moral fabric of Guyana and it will take hard work to bring Guyana back to a state citizens can be proud of.Those were the words of A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) General Secretary, Joseph Harmon, as he commented on Jagdeo’s statements to the effect that he is not interested in any elected position in Guyana. In an invited comment, Harmon said that everything Jagdeo says must be taken with a proverbial pinch of salt as the former president always has “something else coming.”APNU General Secretary, Joseph HarmonHarmon pointed out that Jagdeo chose to say he is not interested in any “elected office” which gives him room to return as a technocrat. This aside, Harmon stressed that Jagdeo does not have to work another day in his life whether in Guyana or any part of the world.Harmon said that the post-Cheddi Jagan People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government developed calculated strategies to ensure that those who are in Office become and remain richer than the majority of the Guyanese society.“During Jagdeo’s time, he and his cabal accumulated vast wealth on the back of the Guyanese people.”“We now have the wealthy Guyana, populated with the people who can afford the works. They can afford to send their children to the best schools and give them the best of everything else including gifts and vacation. Then there is the Guyana which is populated by the majority who cannot afford any of these things.”“They feed off the energy of the ordinary people. All the people who were in office during the Jagdeo time of rule, accumulated wealth for them, their children and their children’s children,” said Harmon.Another point Harmon made is that Jagdeo does not need to be seated officially in the President’s chair to make presidential or prime ministerial decisions. The APNU General Secretary said, “He (Jagdeo) has always been a backseat driver during the Ramotar administration. He will be more comfortable with that because, in that way, he has no obligations. No one can really hold him accountable anymore because he is not officially responsible. He is living a free life but still running the government.”Harmon told Kaieteur News that APNU finds the doings of Jagdeo “obnoxious. “He can still advise but should not be ruling. He had his time and should now give someone the opportunity to flourish, but he loves power so he cannot give up.”Harmon said that Guyana now needs a government to “stop this, as this sort of behavior is robbing the younger generation of resources needed to create a better life for them.”Last week, Jagdeo was reported in sections of the media saying that he is not interested in taking up any local job anytime soon.He said this as he sought to dispel rumors that he was trying to return as president. These speculations came after a court case was filed to remove the two term limit.Jagdeo ended his two consecutive terms in office in 2011, handing the reins of a minority Government to President Donald Ramotar, following General and Regional Elections.Since then, there were attempts to explore the possibilities of him returning. His supporters used flyers and even billboards. Jagdeo had denied he was interested.Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, made it clear at his last post cabinet briefing that Jagdeo remains committed to not pursuing any further appointment to elected constitutional office or posts in Guyana.According to Luncheon, Jagdeo’s position is in direct response to the deliberate attempts to create uncertainty at this particular point in time by the filing of the constitutional motion that essentially seeks to void the constitutional amendment that limits the term of office of Guyanese Presidents.Jagdeo, in a statement read by Dr. Luncheon, disclosed “his disinterest in the matter, and his firm resolution not to entertain further constitutional posts”.The chief government spokesman said that for the former President, it is a matter of principle, which is consistent with his earlier declarations to “all and sundry concerning this matter”.
