The Seaboard Corporation, with its culture ‘to bring opportunity to those who may not have the essential items to live life without significant hardship’ yesterday donated $1M to the Bernice Mansell Foundation.The Foundation is a non-Governmental organisation, which was founded in 1999. It was founded by Ms. Bernice Mansell, in an effort to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged children and young adults.The Seaboard Corporation, on the other hand, is a large agro-based entity involved in a wide range of activities including flour companies in Africa, South America and the Caribbean. It is the parent company of the National Milling Company of Guyana (Namilco), which has been in operation for over 42 years.Presenting the contribution to Ms. Mansell were Matthew J. Geyer, the Financial Controller of Namilco and Marketing Consultant, Affeeze Khan.Matthew J. Geyer, Financial Controller of Namilco, makes the presentation to Ms. Bernice Mansell, in the presence of other Foundation membersAccording to Ms. Mansell, the contribution will go directly towards the literacy programme offered by the institute. It was further added that the organization offers assistance in Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Computer Studies and caters for 10-15 students per school year. The main aim of this organization is to ‘equip’ persons with a ‘solid foundation’ of educational aspects, moral values and ‘character building’.Ms. Mansell who is known for giving her life to charitable causes, once worked for the Radio Needy Children Fund and always nurtured a dream of helping the less fortunate to earn a name for themselves, hence she established a foundation to assist such persons.She is now seeking assistance from OLPF Project Manager Sesh Sukhdeo to assist the institute with some laptops, in order to expand the technology room, since at present the organization has ‘about four computers’ and students are only allowed to practice on these computers once weekly for two hours.According to Geyer, his company wanted to assist a charity organization and the Bernice Mansell Foundation was selected to receive the contribution. Ms. Mansell expresses her gratitude to the company for coming on board.
