Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital were up to press time battling to save the life of 34-year-old mother of three, Malini Basir, who was viciously knifed by her estranged husband at their Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara home early yesterday morning.According to reports Mrs. Basir was attacked in full view of two of her three children, ages five and seven. Residents of the area said that the couple separated some three weeks ago, but Mr. Basir would visit the home in the mornings to collect his children to take them to school. The couple also has a four-month-old son.“Every morning he would come and just blow the car horn and the children would come out and he would leave,”one resident said.A neighbour told this newspaper that it was customary for the two girls to be screaming and making playful noises while taking their baths in the morning. So when persons heard their screams yesterday morning no one paid them any mind.“When dem girls bathing dem does count, one, two, three and then throw de water on dem skin and because de water does cold dem does scream…suh when me hear em scream me ain’t bother with it.”Reports are that it was only after one of the children was heard saying ‘daddy beating mommy, that neighbours were alerted that something was wrong. This newspaper was told that the neighbours ran to see what was going on in the yard and witnessed the woman’s husband calmly walking out.“I turn and say you’re a big man, just go home and left Malini, and he just walk pass me and go in he car…is when I reach under de house somebody give me de baby and I see Malini hold she belly and then she get blackout.”Persons who saw the injured woman said her intestines were protruding from a wound to the lower abdomen. Her uncle who lives in the same village was alerted and the woman was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, but was immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.Up to noon yesterday the woman had already been given four pints of blood and had to undergo emergency surgery. And up to press time yesterday she was still in a critical condition at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.Meanwhile, the woman’s husband is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
