Unusually high winds caused havoc yesterday afternoon on West Coast Demerara as one house was blown over and the roof removed from another in two separate villages.In Anna Catherina, an abandoned house collapsed at approximately 15:15 hours yesterday as the excessively high winds and rain beat upon it. No one was injured. A neighbour said, “Is de wind knock it down.”At approximately 15:45 hours, a house in the Cornelia Ida (CI) Housing Scheme was badly damaged by the high winds as the roof was ripped off and thrown into the neighbour’s yard. Linden London, the owner of the damaged house, said he was at work in the Uitvlugt Estate when he got a call from a neighbour telling him what had happened.An entire section of the roof was pulled off, including the rafters, and thrown into the yard of London’s next door neighbour. Electrical wires and fittings were also torn out when the roof was ripped off of the building.London said that he was thankful that no one was hurt during the incident, and notes that he is also very thankful that there was no fire, considering the electrical fittings were ripped out.London is estimating the damage to be in the vicinity of $800,000.There was also extensive damage to the furniture inside of the house which was exposed to the rain.What London and his neighbours find strange is that the wind was coming from the direction of the land, not the ocean. In Cornelia Ida, it is usual for a steady supply of wind to be coming from the ocean.The neighbour, Roopchand Dasrath, into whose yard the roof was thrown, also reported damages to his property. There were damaged and broken rafters, damaged zinc sheets and a cracked concrete wall. Despite the damage, Dasrath did not seem upset or angry about the situation.Other villagers noted that the rainfall and wind speed were both excessive and not normal for the area. While no one saw the roof being ripped off the building, numerous people reported hearing the sound and feeling the impact as the roof was thrown into the other yard.London said that he has never had any problems with the roof of the building before, save a loose zinc sheet which he had re-secured some months earlier.The interior of the house is still under construction, and London explained that he planned to salvage what he could and secure it in the downstairs of the building, where he would be staying until he could repair the damage done to the roof.
