– as efforts are made by M&CC to undertake waste collectionIn wake of the suspension of garbage collection by waste disposal contractors, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown is urging city residents to ensure that their garbage are placed in bags and sprinkled with a solution of Jay’s fluid.  This action according to Deputy Solid Waste Director, Ishrie Rattan, is especially crucial to ward off callous interference of garbage by “junkies” and/or animals.According to Rattan although the contractors have suspended their service efforts are still to be made on the part of the municipality to remove waste from certain sections of the city including the municipal markets, the Municipal Abattoir and the hospitals.He said that the city administration is also contemplating providing clearance to a few wards in the city.Among the areas that have so far felt the brunt of the halted waste collection are Kitty, J and K Campbellville, Newtown, Kitty, West Ruimveldt, South Ruimveldt Gardens, East Ruimveldt, Werk-en-Rust, Wortmanville, Belvoir Court, Prashad Nagar, Jacksonville Waterfront (Housing Scheme), North Ruimveldt, North and South Cummingsburg Waterfront, Lacytown, Robbstown, Bourda, Alberttown, Kingston, South Ruimveldt Park and Lodge. Additionally A-D Campbellville, La Penitence, Sophia, Blygezight, Lodge Housing Scheme, Shirley Field Ridley Square, Lacytown, Bel Air Promenade, Bel Air, Thorens Drive, Century Palm Gardens, Roxanne Burnha, Gardens and Guyhoc Gardens are areas in which waste collection activities have been suspended.The contractors on Monday opt to withdraw their service from the municipality in retaliation to the failure by the municipality to honour its obligation pay for services rendered during the past three months. According to Acting Town Clerk, Ms Sharon Harry-Munroe, yesterday the council has so far been able to furnish the contractors with a total of $12M which represents payment for two weeks but is yet to garner some $60M to pay off the outstanding debt.Public Relations Officer Royston King had disclosed that the council is working assiduously to garner enough money to pay the contractors as well as to honour its other financial obligations, including the payment of wages and salaries.He revealed that the municipality continues to target defaulting property owners who have failed settle their accounts. “We are continuing to talk to those people and corporations that owe us large sums to liquidate their arrears.”In addition he revealed that efforts are being made to look at the core services being offered by the municipality to re-examine where there are inefficiencies in a bid to eliminate them even as attempts are intensified to garner revenue.According to King, the municipality is very much aware that it is considerably indebted to the contractors and therefore will engage every possible measure to uncover revenue to make urgent payments.In this regard, he said that some 28,000 demand notices have already been served to defaulting property owners even as the support of the judicial system is being engaged.However, Mayor Hamilton Green said yesterday that “we have no difficulty with the contractors for withdrawing their services…in fact I think they are justified. You can’t run a business and not be paid.”However he noted that there is a good side to the whole waste disposal situation as based on the timetable given to the municipality some months ago waste disposal at the Le Repentir Dump site should come to an end by next month.
