Georgetown Magistrate, Judy Latchman, sentenced an absentee defendant to more than two years jail, yesterday.The defendant, Steve Mohan was accused of breaking and entering a Prashad Nagar home and maliciously wounding the owner.The allegation is that on March 11 2013, Mohan wounded Clifford Ifill, with intent to cause him actual bodily harm.On the same day, he broke and entered the man’s Lot 114 Amla Avenue, Prashad Nagar home and reportedly carted off items, including five cellular phones.Mohan initially pleaded not guilty to both counts and was placed on $50,000 bail but he subsequently, went missing during his trial.As a result, an ex parte trial was carried out in the defendant’s absence and the sentence handed down.Prosecutor Renetta Bentham told the court, on the day in question, around 9:30 hours, the victim upon returning home saw a bicycle in his yard and went to inquire whose it was. As the complainant entered his yard, he found the defendant, carrying a bag on his back, exiting the front door.The man took the suspect by the hand and back into the house to see if anything had been stolen. Mohan opened the bag, under the pretence of showing its contents to Ifill, and took out a knife, and stabbed him in the abdomen.As a result, Ifill received several cuts to his hands. He began to bleed and to grow weak. Mohan escaped.The matter was reported to a nearby Police station on April 11, last. The suspect was seen by the complainant later at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, when he was on just another attempt to flee the jurisdiction.There, Mohan was apprehended by law enforcement officers.
