After three years of alleged verbal and physical abuse by violent neighbours, a Lyng Street, Charlestown couple is appealing to authorities to intervene.Showing visible facial injuries, Mr. and Mrs. Carrington yesterday related stories of torment by their neighbours, who live several houses away from their apartment. They claim their perpetrators are members of a criminal gang known to law enforcement officers.Although the Carringtons accused police of taking little action against their tormentors, Kaieteur News was told that Mrs. Carrington made a complaint at the Ruimveldt police Station about being struck with a gun at around 20:00 hrs on Saturday. She was given a medical to take to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, while a police patrol visited the area, a source said.Mrs. Carrington, an American by birth, has been living in Guyana for over a year with her husband at their Lyng Street apartment. It is alleged that on Thursday, instead of enjoying a romantic evening together to celebrate Mrs. Carrington’s birthday, the couple was beaten and robbed by their neighbours.Mrs. Carrington said at around 17:30 hrs, while waiting in her yard for Mr. Carrington’s arrival, her neighbours began taunting her. Ignoring them paid-off until Mr. Carrington arrived. She said that within a flash several men and women began robbing and beating her and Mr. Carrington. She claimed that they were relieved of $16,000 in cash, a pair of gold earrings, a gold chain, and a pair of diamond earrings.Mrs. Carrington said that her husband, who was beaten to an unconscious state, was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. A statement was given to the police at the hospital and they made a report to the Ruimveldt Police Station. She claimed that at the station, one of the women involved in the matter began using threatening language against them and the ranks present did nothing. The woman said she is frustrated by the justice system and believes even if she or her husband is killed nothing will be done.Mrs. Carrington claims that several cases were dismissed because of lack of evidence.“I don’t know what evidence they want…the last time the police pick up some stones that these people pelt us with and break our windscreen…I thought that was evidence but nothing became of that and the matter was thrown out,” Mrs. Carrington said.Mrs. Carrington alleged that on Friday, she was called to identify one of her perpetrators at the Ruimveldt Station. She claimed that when she arrived, her perpetrator was sitting on a bench and began hurling nasty remarks to her.“I don’t know since when someone who has to be part of an ID parade would get to see the person who has to identify them…That is just impossible,” she said. This allegedly led to the Carringtons being attacked the following day by the brother of the man she had identified. It is claimed that the man’s brother, accompanied by a friend, approached the couple and began threatening to kill them while pointing to the gun in his waist.Fearful for their lives, the couple went back to Ruimveldt Police Station. On their way home, whilst walking through James Street, the couple was reportedly attacked by the same man who threatened them earlier. According to Mrs. Carrington, the suspect approached her husband with an ice-pick, but her spouse managed to escape on his motorcycle. However, the woman claimed that she was beaten severely and was struck to the face with a gun.She alleged that she returned to the station and again no statement was taken. However, they were given a police escort home. The couple is scared and appealing for justice.Contrary to this report, Kaieteur News was told that Mrs. Carrington was given a medical document to take to the GPHC and that a patrol was sent out to investigate her complaint.Kaieteur News was also told that while Mrs. Carrington has made previous complaints, matters against her accusers have been dismissedbecause the alleged victims failed to turn up to give evidence.
