Georgetown Public Hospital has begun taking steps to improve wound care and introduceTools on display for the medical workshopthe use of implants into their institution with the first Wound Care and Implants Workshop that was launched yesterday at Princess Hotel.Numerous tools and artificial bones were displayed on tables for the practical aspects of the workshop for doctors, medical students, and nurses in attendance. Those engaged in the workshop were taught how to replace joints, hips and exposed to the idea of spinal implants new to the medical scene in Guyana.According to Dr. Ivor Crandon, Head of the Division of Neurosurgery, at the University of the West Indies, “This (workshop) is a modern way of managing a difficult problem.”He explained that previously when someone broke his hip he would lie in a hospital bed for three months waiting for the bone to heal, but with the introduction of hip replacements the hospital stay can be cut down to one week. The improvements to the system may very well cut cost to the public hospital and lessen the stress on patients who are in need of such operations. The event was a coalition between Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and Medical Technologies Incorporated. |
