A 25-year-old Charlestown resident and her 62-year-old mother are counting their lucky stars after they survived a vehicular collision last Saturday.The women however suffered severe injuries following the mishap, which occurred, around 3 pm on Saturday afternoon, in the vicinity of Broad and Charles Streets, Georgetown.Last Saturday’s smash -up that left two women injured.Anansa Abbensetts said that on she was heading east along Broad Street, approaching Charles Street when a black Rav4 PNN 6435, failed to stop at the intersection, resulting in the collision.Abbennsetts was the driver of motorcar, PMM884 at the time, with her mother, Devika London.“The Rav4 vehicle was speeding towards us; it literally flew across the road and slammed into our vehicle, which crashed into the fence at Dolphin Secondary School”After the accident, Abensetts said that the driver failed to render any assistance to the injured, even though he was conscious of their plight.“He just stood there,” the Charlestown resident stated.Kaieteur News understands that the women sought the help of police ranks on a mobile patrol, who just happened to be passing by at the time of the accident.“We were rushed to the Woodlands Hospital where we were treated for our injuries, I was given oxygen as I was finding it hard to breathe…my mother sustained severe injuries to the chest and ribs; she has difficulty moving around”   Abbensetts explained.A report was subsequently lodged at the Ruimveldt Police Station.However, this newspaper was told that charges can only be instituted against the driver of the Rav4 after advice is given by the Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP) since the man is an official of the Guyana Defence Force. According to the women, the army official has shown “absolutely no concern since the accident”.“He showed up at the station one time and had nothing to say. He seemed so unconcerned”“What is most appalling is that someone who swore to serve and protect the country and its citizens can be so ruthless and unfeeling,” Devika London added.
