–    Health Minister–    Health MinisterIt has been over one month now since news broke that a mystery illness in Venezuela had killed approximately thirty-eight indigenous people in the northeastern Venezuelan state of Delta Amacuro, which is a close province to Guyana.When Guyana was made aware of the situation, the Ministry of Health immediately increased monitoring for any mysterious illness or disease between the borders of Guyana and Venezuela.To date, Guyana has still not received any official confirmation from Venezuela about the mystery illness, despite the local Health Ministry sending a letter to the Minister of Health in Venezuela relating its concerns and the seriousness of such an unfortunate incident.Letters were also sent to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and to the focal point for international health regulations.However, Guyana is still awaiting responses from these organizations.When contacted for an update on the situation on Saturday, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said that “nobody seems to be paying attention to the incident,” as he explained that persons seemed to have ‘lost interest’ in finding out exactly what transpired in the area.However, Minister Ramsammy noted, while his ministry is still intensively monitoring the situation at the borders, health officers have not found anything unusual taking place in Region One, Barima Waini, as everything appears to be normal and no unusual illness has surfaced.
