Squatters account for 80 per cent of litter found in city canals, according to a report from the City Engineer’s Department.A release issued by the Georgetown municipality made reference to the North sideline canal, a reserve which accommodates numerous squatters. In the release, the Mayor and City Council expressed concern over the problem of littering in the city, noting that the situation has become a constant worry, particularly in those waterways which have squatters along the reserves.“Many of these squatters do not have the requisite receptacle for proper disposal of refuse. As a result, they dump their garbage in the canal.”According to the release which was inked by Public Relations Officer, Royston King, garbage and other waste provide an appropriate environment for aggressive aquatic growth which in turn provides breeding places for mosquitoes.King pointed out that squatting on reserves continues to negatively affect the council’s limited resources and thus negatively impacts developmental works in other areas for which the municipality has responsibility. For this reason he disclosed that “The council is calling upon all squatters to dispose of their garbage in a proper manner; assist by talking to their friends and neighbours about keeping their surroundings clean. They should have receptacles in their yards…”In the meantime the council is finalising an education programme to help citizens better understand the importance of a clean and healthy environment. And even as efforts are being engaged to address the litter problem, King has highlighted that the municipality is worried about the number of homeless people living and sleeping around public facilities and monuments, in the city.“Many of these people rummage through garbage bins and leave the place in an untidy manner,” the release outlined. As a result it was noted that the Constabulary and Solid Waste Management Department have been doing their utmost to “prevent those who appear to have veered off the normal side, from emptying bins in search of things and sleeping on benches and pavements”.However it was related by King that “the challenge is bigger than the council. It really calls for a collective effort by all stakeholders to treat with it.”And while the council is cognizant of the fact that the Ministry of Human Services, Non-Governmental Organisations and other stakeholders are working with its Social Development Committee to address the problem, there is still the belief that relatives can do more for their roaming loved ones.“With just a little more effort and patience, relatives and family members could assist with this social challenge,” King said.
