After a week of freedom, prison escapee Shawn Yhap is back behind bars.Yhap was captured at about 14:10 hours yesterday in the village of Chateau Margot on the East Coast of Demerara, thanks to the help of public-spirited residents who recognized him from a photograph that was published in the newspapers.Yhap, who was serving time for larceny, had escaped from lawful custody two Saturdays ago, from the prisons at Timehri, while on steel band duties.Kaieteur News understands that residents spotted the fugitive and quickly alerted members of their community policing group.Recognizing that he had been identified, Yhap immediately shaved off his plaited hair and changed his clothes in an attempt to elude capture.As the residents closed in on him, he made a dash to escape but was eventually cornered and held by the CPG members until a police anti-crime unit arrived.This newspaper was told that at first the fugitive identified himself as Shawn Smith of Lusignan. He then changed his story and admitted that he was indeed Shawn Yhap, who had escaped from prison and whose address is listed as Kitty, Georgetown.He was positively identified by Principal Prison Officer Two Henry Hope at the Beterverwagting Police Station, where he was initially taken.He was eventually handed over to Prison officials who arrived to take him to the Camp Street prisons.He is expected to be charged with escaping from lawful custody. As he was being taken away, he was heard saying that he had escaped because one of his brothers had drowned and he wanted to attend his funeral. According to a source, Yhap had previously served time for murder.
