Furious residents of Ituni and Kwakwani continue to block the main access road into their community in protest of its deplorable state for the past 40 years.A huge log blocks vehicles from passing along the Kwakwani/Ituni road.According to a source, the 36 mile long road has been in its deplorable state with no rehabilitations work being done to reconstruct it even as heavy duty trucks and vehicles constantly continue to traverse it.The residents commenced their protest since Thursday last and are vowing to continue until there is a concrete solution.“The road is in a terrible, terrible state and no one seems to care, so we came out to block the road and it will remain closed until we can get a proper response about what’s going to happen,” the source said.She added that because of the dreadful state the road is in, it takes commuters as much as three hours to complete the entire route from Kwakwani to Ituni.“When you travelling, it does be a real discomfort because of the deep holes they got and when the rain comes down it does be another risk,” one resident said.Another resident explained that every year, a number of contractors go in with trucks and place sand on the affected areas of the road.“They come and throw down the sand then they grade it down, when the traffic start back two mornings after that, the road get worse. I want they do something about this road because it’s really bad,” the resident said.Meanwhile a minibus driver of the Kwakwani area told this publication that he and other operators were forced to raise the normal fare due to the pounding their vehicles have to go through.“It might sound like joke but every time we come out the road, we got to go to the vulcanizing shop because we develop some serious problems with these busses,” the driver said.He added that because of the state of the road, travelling the route costs them much more at the pumps due to the fact that vehicles burn more fuel.“We need something to be done about this road. We went to everyone and complain but no one seems to listen to us, so the next thing we gon do is close down operations until they do something to it,” the driver said.Regional Chairman of Region 10 Sharma Solomon also visited the area and spoke to residents on the way forward.
