In its effort to maintain a high standard of Child Care,Johnny Oduya Jersey, Kiskadee Kids Daycare and Playgroup held another Multi Task Training Workshop last Saturday, at the entity’s location on Queen Street, Kitty.The institution which had conducted a similar workshop last August organised the seminar to enhance the capacity of teachers, caregivers and parents to engage in new methods,Joe Mullen Jersey, skills and techniques in the execution of their work with children.Saturday’s sessions included discussions on Stigma and Discrimination which dealt with understanding behavioural changes as it relates to HIV/AIDS and the connection between HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STIs); Child Protection – Sexual Abuse and how to handle the disclosure of such occurrences; blood donation – the importance of voluntary blood donation; Autism – its awareness and how to detect it; Interpersonal Relationships – building healthy work relationships and Early Childhood Development – learning outcomes for early childhood development in the Caribbean among other topics relevant to child care.Among the Presenters were Maria Mitchell, who discussed HIV /Aids; Shauntel Maloney,Glenn Hall Jersey, whose focus was on Sexual Abuse and how to handle such exposé; Kerri Gravesande, who spoke about the importance of blood donation, and Karen Williams, whose conversation on Autism Awareness was perhaps the most stirring presentation that evoked numerous enquiries as participants sought information on the subject. Paulette Bollers and Godryne Wintz examined building healthy relationships and early childhood development respectively.Attended by more than 40 participants,Denis Savard Jersey, that included caregivers from host Kiskadee Kids,Jaromir Jagr Jersey, Cherish Lambs, Green Acres, Holy Kids Foundation and the Little Sunshine Playgroup, they listened attentively as Williams,Jarret Stoll Jersey, who is the President of the Guyana Greenheart Autistic School gave a profound explanation of what is Autism and how to deal with a child that suffers from the illness.Williams said that Autism is a lifelong handicap that recognises no barriers to either race or social class,David Savard Jersey, and affects a wide range of persons from those that have severe learning difficulties to those of normal or tremendous intelligence.She stated that even though there is a plethora of theories advocated as the possible cause of autism, the overwhelming evidence seems to suggest that it is caused by some form of neuro-developmental disorder which affects the part of the brain that controls, interprets and responds to the sensory messages from the outside world.According to her, it is distinguished by three inter-related impairments and their behavioural consequences and they are imagination, communication and social skills.Williams also gave pointers that seem to work to at least assist a child in getting to a level where they could be understood by the wider society and even make admirable progression in life.Some of those included the pitch of one’s voice which should be calm, firm, even and persistent,Brent Seabrook Jersey, while your posture should be non-threatening,Teuvo Teravainen Jersey, firm, in charge and in close proximity.She added that respect for the child and being patient are also virtues that should be exhibited at all times when dealing with a child or anyone who suffers from the handicap. |
