The New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) took home the winner’s trophy yesterday fromComposite picture showing Mr. Hazel posing with the various winners and participants of the competition yesterdaythe Eli Hazel/Ministry of Education Reading and Explanation Competition. The event which was planned and executed by Fitness enthusiast in Berbice, Mr. Eli Hazel, on the occasion of his birthday, was held in collaboration with the Region Six Department of Education at St. Aloysius Primary School.Several schools including Berbice High School, Canje Secondary, All Saints Primary, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, Edinburg Primary, St. Therese’s Primary and Lochaber Primary, participated in the competition.St. Therese’s Primary won the Primary segment of the competition. Each student was given a passage to read. That passage dealt with numerous social issues and ills, ranging from domestic violence to use of cellular phones while driving.The participants, after completing the reading, had to explain their basic understanding of what they read to the judge. The judge of the competition was veteran educator, Mr. Lansford Chung.Winners were presented with trophies and special gifts, including lunches for two, from various New Amsterdam restaurants and beauty makeovers from various beauty salons in the town, all compliments of Hazel.All participants received certificates.Hazel, speaking to the participants, said that he loves to do things for children. “It is what makes me happy,” he said.Also present at the event was Literacy Advisor attached to the Department of Education, New Amsterdam, Ms. Simone Dainty.
