The son of local broadcaster C.N. Sharma, Jaipaul Sharma, was on Monday slapped with two vehicular charges, when he appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.Sharma was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and with reckless driving on Friday last. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was represented by attorney at law Vic Puran, who, in a bail application, said that his client would be vigorously defending the case. There was no objection to bail by the prosecution.The owners of a truck, who are represented by attorney at law Winston Murray, said that the defendant was driving under the influence of alcohol when he slammed into their truck GEE 2531.According to Rehana Jetto, on the day in question, the defendant was proceeding at a fast rate when he slammed into their truck.. At the time of the accident Rafeek Hussain was driving the truck.She said that a cousin of the defendant had made contact with them stating that they would be standing the expenses for repairing the truck. The woman said that the defendant experienced a change of mind and has since refused to pay them any money.The woman said that she was surprised to hear the lawyer say that Sharma would be defending the case. She said that he was clearly drunk and that it was the truck driver that rescued Sharma from the wrecked vehicle.His blood alcohol limit at the time of the accident was five times over the legal limit, according to court records.He also sustained a broken leg as a result of the accident.Sharma is on $50,000 bail.
