A staff member found with a bottle of whisky in the New Amsterdam-based J’s Supermarket when that staff member should have been at work led to a store wide audit that uncovered the theft of millions of dollars worth of items from the entity.This theft involved a number of other staff members. As the probe deepened and the police were called in, a number of the staff members were detained and subsequently released on station bail. Five are likely to be charged.It was uncovered that a variety of articles including electrical appliances, kitchen utensils, cosmetics, food stuff and confectionery items were among the items stolen from the supermarket.J’s Supermarket has branches at Strand and Republic Road in New Amsterdam. The theft occurred between December 1, 2014 and January 7, 2015.However due to the number of items stolen and recovered, investigators are looking at the possibility of items being stolen earlier during the year.Investigators were able to uncover that the workers had set up an organised network and a well organised scheme where the items were stashed and taken out of the supermarket.According to information, items were removed from the bond with the concurrence of the bond clerk and placed among the garbage which was then placed for disposal.  Once out of the compound the items were then taken to some of the employees’ homes and other places.Other items were passed unchecked by the cashier, or were undervalued. As the scam was uncovered by investigators a number of items worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were recovered at the home of an employee whom it is understood operates the vehicle that removed the garbage. Investigators were stunned at some of the items recovered at the home of the employee. Investigators turned up at the supermarket just as the man was packing a set of items to be disposed.In the meanwhile it is understood that a number of the employees have decided to talk about what really took place while a few have confessed to the crime. Some are willing to make restitution.It is understood that one person of interest, a cashier, has not been seen since.
