The bus driver responsible for the death of re-migrant cyclist,Jay Bouwmeester Jersey, Roy Albert Mendonca, will be spending the next 54 months in jail. He was found guilty on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.Sookraj Permaul, 26,Brandon Dubinsky Jersey, was convicted yesterday by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore,Jonathan Drouin Team North America Jersey, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.Permaul had initially denied that on April 2,Martin Brodeur Jersey, last year on Carifesta Avenue,David Clarkson Jersey, Georgetown, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor bus BNN 6492, thereby causing the death of Mendonca.Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP),Brian Elliott Jersey, Stephen Telford,Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Team North America Jersey, presented the prosecution’s case. Telford called a number of witnesses to testify during the year long trial. These consisted of police and civilians.According to reports, Mendonca, who had received an award for being the top ‘over 60’ rider, was riding west along Carifesta on the morning of the day in question. Permaul was travelling east along the said roadway and attempted to overtake a few vehicles, when he struck Mendonca.Following the head-on collision with the minibus, the 67-year-old,Michal Rozsival Jersey, who resided at Lot 281 Forshaw Street,Seth Jones Team North America Jersey, Queenstown, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead.The convict made his first court appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the charge. Before his sentencing Permaul was released on $800,000 bail. |
